Concealed Steel Connections in Post and Beam Buildings

Concealed Steel Connections in Post and Beam Buildings

The Safari Load Platform at Six Flags - New Jersey is an open structure, which is beautiful, but creates some engineering challenges.  Without a structural plywood skin, as most buildings have, all the lateral forces (forces caused by wind) must travel through the beams and be concentrated in the joints. Sometimes the forces are just too big, and must be resolved with hidden steel joinery.

The photo to the left shows a concealed tension tie using 4" shear plates, 3/4x6" lags, a steel plate welded to a 1" diameter rod, and a 4"x4" steel plate washer. The system will resolve 9,000 pounds of tension.
